JSM has grown as God has encouraged churches, Christian foundations and individual donors to support JSM’s three ministry programs:

Scholars

Helping top Christian leaders receive Ph.D. degrees to teach the next generation of pastors and church leaders.

Many Majority World Christian leaders would reply that the greatest need is for more pastors who take their teaching and preaching responsibilities with due seriousness. If it is true (as Jesus said, quoting from Deuteronomy) that human beings live not on bread only but on God’s Word, it is equally true of churches. Churches live, grow and flourish by the Word of God, and languish and die without it. It has been observed that ‘the decadent eras and periods of the church’s history have always been those in which preaching has declined’. Conversely, whenever the Word of God is faithfully expounded and applied, congregations grow in both size and depth.

If the great need is a rise in the standards of biblical preaching, how can we help to ensure a steady supply of better preachers? Although many answers could probably be given to this question, the Scholarship Program has felt led to focus on the seminaries where pastors are trained.

Here is the logic as we see it.

First, churches depend very largely on their pastors.

Second, pastors depend on their seminaries, where they are either made or marred, equipped or ruined.

Third, seminaries depend on their faculty members, who influence their students for good or ill by their teaching and example.

Fourth, these faculty members need to be well qualified, both in academic ability and in spiritual maturity.

In these four simple steps we have traced the welfare of local churches back to the quality of seminary teachers, hence the Scholars Program. Since the beginning of our operation in 1974, 185 supported Scholars have successfully obtained their doctorates and are now exercising scholarly roles of increasing influence in their home countries. Currently 96 additional scholars are studying in the Program.

Of course there are other organizations that make grants to post-graduate theology students. But we venture to claim five distinctives relating to the Scholars in our Program.

                       Their Selection
It is no longer possible for any Western group to select the students they intend to support. Nor is it wise to respond to students who propose themselves. Instead, we give priority to those who are strongly recommended by MW church leaders (e.g., bishops, superintendents or seminary principals) and who are being groomed as future theological teachers.

                       Their Research
We encourage applicants to choose a research topic that is relevant to their home situation and that will help to equip them for their future teaching role. Once the research area is agreed, we work hard to find the best supervisor.

                       Their Personal Growth
Good seminary teachers are not qualified by academic excellence alone. They also need to be people of mature Christian character and personal godliness. So we are determined not to allow the Scholars Program to degenerate into a purely grant-making body. Instead, we establish a personal relationship with each Scholar from the beginning of their studies. We arrange for each to receive pastoral care, as well as be a member of a good local church. The members of our Scholar Care Teams meet with Scholars on a regular basis for prayer and fellowship.

                       Their Return Home
One of the major problems faced by grant-making bodies is the steady leakage of church leaders who study in the West but do not return home after graduation. We ask all our Scholars to sign an agreement that it is their firm intention to return to their home country after they’ve completed their degree, and all have done so with the exception of two who are in positions of international leadership.

                       Their Aftercare
When students return home, we do not forget them. We offer them membership in the Fellowship of Langham Scholars and make sure that they are members of their continental evangelical theological fellowship. We make sure that they have been enrolled in the Literature Program’s annual book grant. We encourage them to write and to be involved with our Preaching Seminars.

This growing Scholars Program undergirds Majority World seminaries and churches with pastors who embrace and excel in Biblical preaching and teaching.

Literature

Distributing needed commentaries and books for pastors and supporting international writers in creating culturally appropriate texts.

First, we carefully select 2 books each year— especially biblical expositions—and send them to about 12,000 church leaders to help them in their preaching. Two simpler books are selected for approximately 60,000 untrained pastors.

Second, we offer a grant annually to 900 seminary libraries, helping them obtain key evangelical works.

Third, we help nearly 40,000 seminary students and faculty to buy, at a heavily subsidized price, basic reference books to form the nucleus of their personal library.

Because book publishers and distributors give the program generous discounts, the actual value of the books delivered is highly leveraged and represents almost three times our expenditure budget. The Literature Program would not exist if it weren’t for these publishing and distribution partners who are the key link for making good evangelical books available to seminary libraries, faculty, students and pastors.

It would be hard to imagine life without our books, but many pastors from developing countries have nearly empty bookshelves. The Literature Program is helping stock these pastors’ reference libraries with good evangelical books. This effort is having a great effect on the quality of preaching and teaching in many churches around the world.

Preaching

Providing training and resources to help pastors bring their congregations toward maturity in Christ.

The Preaching Program has three strategic objectives:

                       Facilitating
We work with national believers country by country to strengthen a movement for relevant Bible exposition, with support and continuity as the movement gathers momentum.

                       Networking
We provide a forum for like-minded inpiduals, churches and agencies who share the conviction that a movement for Bible exposition is an essential part of the church’s mission worldwide.

                       Pioneering
We act as a catalyst in those countries where the need is considerable but the resources are very limited.

The Preaching Program includes as one of its strategies a three-level seminar that gives practical help and encouragement to those who teach the Bible regularly, whether as pastors, lay preachers or evangelists. This is offered in local situations, initially at a fairly basic level, with a seminar of a few days’ duration. A three-level curriculum is being developed for those who might be able to sustain the project over several years. In some contexts there are refresher days and small ‘preacher’s clubs’ developing, encouraging continuity and longer term support, and we are exploring plans for the ‘training of trainers’.

The aims of the Preaching Program are motivational (to encourage people to take the Bible seriously in their ministry); educational (to instruct in evangelical doctrine of Scripture and principles of interpretation); and practical (to offer workshops on developing an expository ministry: sermon preparation, planning a church preaching schedule, understanding our culture, developing personal spiritual life, etc.). Training is shaped to meet the needs as identified by local leaders, to suit the context of each country.

Preaching is supported through the Literature Program, and eventually through the Langham Preaching Network, a forum of like-minded leaders around the world who will share ideas, news and resources through a website and through regional and international consultations. An international team of facilitators has been established, as well as a small group of staff and some regional coordination through Langham Partnership Regional Councils.

Testimonials

Some kind words about the work of JSM:

"You may not ever be able to have a "first degree" experience at a preaching seminar in Africa, so let your imagination run with me to Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo last autumn...With helicopter gunships flying in and out of the airport next door and regular machine gun fire at night, these courageous men and women opened their Bibles to learn how to study a passage and construct a sound message from the text."
