Happy Birthday, Uncle John
Dear Friends,
God raises up leaders – and there is no question that, by His grace, He raised up John Stott and strategically placed him at London’s All Souls Church, Langham Place. Yet that pulpit became more than a physical platform of teaching. From there and across the years, God called John Stott to global impact that has re-contoured our landscape of faith. Around the world, millions of people have been and continue to be blessed through the clarity of his presentation of the Scriptures and who Jesus is. You are likely among those who have been blessed, challenged, and encouraged either by John Stott himself – or one of many people he helped launch into ministry.
You may also be one of those folks who call him “Uncle John,” a mantle of endearment that captures the personal impact that he has had on so many people. In fact, that is why I am writing.
Today, April 27, 2011 is Uncle John’s 90th birthday. John’s actual 90th birthday celebration will be quite informal — a quiet gathering for tea around 4:00 p.m. London time. But it's not not too late for you to join in the celebration...many of his friends want to surprise him with their personal birthday wishes. To help that along, we'd like you to leave your birthday greetings for Uncle John in the comments section below.
Though John Stott Ministries was named for Uncle John (over his objections, by the way), the ministry has never been about perpetuating his teachings. The ministry’s genesis was Uncle John’s realization of the need for solid, trustworthy Bible teaching where the church is fast advancing (parts of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the former Soviet block and even the Middle East). In recent conversation, Uncle John has re-stated that what he wishes to continue as his legacy is this vision of training Bible teachers and providing resources for pastors, seminaries and Bible Schools in the developing world (the “Majority World”).
Therefore, as you post your birthday greeting, please prayerfully consider including a birthday celebration gift to help fund the vision that is so close to Uncle John’s heart. What a blessing it would be to share with him how his friends rallied to support what he so sincerely wants to advance – and with appropriate gusto!
I’ll close this letter with words from John Stott’s The Birds, Our Teachers: "Every Christian should be owl-like or Mr. Facing-Both-Ways, because all the time we should be looking back to the past with gratitude and on to the future with expectation....We can perform our essential spiritual contortion, looking back to Christ's death and resurrection with enormous gratitude, and looking on to his return with eager expectation." I am still using both volumnes in preparing my university lectures and church preaching. Almost you convince this Bapt. pastor to be an anglican vicar. I do use the Prayer Book to help with weddings, baptisms, and ordidnations.

I dont remember the title, but I know it was an address to graduating students from a Christian University. One statement from that article changed my view of evangelism. "We owe Christ to the world". In this day and age of materialism, consumerism and shameless 'meism', you made me stop and think of what I owed the world...Jesus Christ, the only answer to all the world's woes!
